INTRODUCTION
Both human and animal health care professionals recognize swimming as one of the best forms of exercise. Swimming allows the body to achieve increased mobility in stiff or sore joints as well as helping to rebuild muscle mass around affected joints. Increased cardiovascular and respiratory fitness can also be achieved without the pounding and jarring of other forms of exercise.

Most veterinarians agree that swimming is an excellent exercise for dogs suffering from arthritis or hip dysplasia, and for post surgical rehabilitation (Veterinarian recommendation required). Swimming is suitable for all breeds of dogs. It is a gentle way of rebuilding their fitness, especially where a weight bearing exercise would be too strenuous.

PET INN Resort & Spa offers a safe, convenient, alternative to backyard pools or lakes. Our spa is heated and has a non-chlorine filtration system that will not cause skin or eye irritation. If your dog has a fear of water or is not structurally designed for swimming, we work patiently with your pet to assure his comfort and security. For their safety and to aid in buoyancy, our swimmers either wear US Coast Guard approved life preservers or they are fitted with custom canine slings that are used in conjunction with our electronic lift.

Ask your veterinarian about the many benefits of swimming your dog. Let's work together to enhance your pet's quality of life.

HOW OUR HYDRO-SPA PROGRAM WORKS

The PET INN Spa is an indoor, climate controlled environment that is equipped with our dual purpose unit: that is both a swimming pool and a hydro-massage spa. The massage spa is used for the older or more infirmed dogs in which swimming represents an excessive or impossible degree of exertion. The massage spa functions in a manner similar to a human Jacuzzi, providing warm water muscle stimulation, which can help reduce muscle stiffness and soreness. In our experience, warm water massage can help improve mobility and general attitude.

Our Hydro-Spa is also a warm filtered pool, deep enough that even large breeds of dogs are unable to touch the bottom. We use one of the first ionized bacteriostatic filtering systems to be used in a canine spa (these systems are in widespread use in domestic and municipal pools). This allows us to avoid the use of Chlorine and thus swim dogs with chemical-sensitive skin/eye conditions in safety.

During a swim session, dogs are gently lifted and placed into the pool. For their safety and to aid in buoyancy, our swimmers wear US Coast Guard approved life preservers. Large or disabled pets are lifted and supported by our electronic canine lift. Depending on the initial degree of fitness, the dogs either swim in calm water or against one or two adjustable jets that are angled against the direction of motion. A minute's swim against both jets is roughly equivalent to a mile's walk/run in terms of overall exertion without the joint loading that occurs in normal exercise.

The principle of swimming is to provide musculo-skeletal movement and to improve cardiovascular and respiratory fitness & stamina while avoiding high-impact damage to the joints. The maximum duration of a single session is 15 minutes, which includes rest periods.

REQUIREMENTS FOR YOUR PET TO JOIN OUR SWIMMING PROGRAM

YOUR PET MUST HAVE CURRENT INOCULATIONS AND BE CLEAN AND PARASITE FREE.
TALK WITH YOUR VETERINARIAN ABOUT THE BENEFITS OF SWIMMING YOUR DOG.
IF YOUR DOG HAS BEEN DIAGNOSED WITH THE FOLLOWING PHYSICAL CONDITIONS.

SWIMMING MAY HELP;

Arthritis
Including, but not exclusively: hip dysplasia. Elbow/Shoulder OCD. Vertebral spondylosis. An after-swim, warm Hydro Massage is very soothing and helps to relax muscles.

Ligamentous Damage
Particularly postoperative cruciate rupture. Swimming enables the dog to begin active exercise without imposing high-impact stress on the newly repaired ligament.

Spinal Disc Lesions
Lumbar and cervical spinal disc lesions (in the post-surgical phase).

Obesity
Exercise is a very important part of any weight-reduction program. Swimming is particularly useful in the obese dog with chronic arthritis in which normal levels of exercise are improbable if not impossible.

Detailed records are kept of each dog's swim, its progress in the pool in terms of duration of swim and difficulty level (calm water, one or two jets).
